Do you miss the days when a band of four amphibian brothers who found themselves crawling through some ooze completely dominated the landscape of pop culture? Do you fondly remember the bountiful stream of mutated spin-offs, homages, and knock-offs that spiraled out of that one, beautiful idea? Then have I got a treat for you!

Chicken Grit & The Mutant Furies can scratch that itch you have been ignoring for so long that you probably forgot you even had it. The first action-packed issue introduces us to our band of mutated misfits.

As I alluded to before, this book is a throwback to the days of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Mighty MutAnimals, Street Sharks, Food Fighters, Battletoads, and any number of other mutant (insert item here) superheroes from the nineties. It even throws in some nods to classic wrestling characters and The A-Team, to boot. Reading it gave me the same vibes as the old Archie Ninja Turtle books from my childhood in all the best ways. The artwork is also crisp and over the top to really capture that Saturday Morning cartoon vibe. This modern homage to these classics is screaming for a line of toys to go along with these gnarly characters.

There have been few (very few) times in my life that I have read a comic and INSTANTLY knew that I was going to be a lifelong fan. Finishing the last page of "Chicken Grit & The Mutant Furies" was one of those rare moments. From the opening panel, this book is something special. It feels like the start of something bigger than itself. From the instantly engaging concept to the harsh, almost overwhelming art style, it is a comic steeped in a delicious blend of heavy metal and 80's action figures.

The problem with high concepts like "mutated chicken revenge epic" is that they can easily fall into boring cliches. I am happy to say that writer and artist Chris Guest manages not only to (seemingly effortlessly) dodge boring tropes but instead flips them on their head with grace (and a whole lot of wonderful violence!). There are elements of the comic that, on face value, can seem crude or unpolished, but by the end of the issue that becomes a part of the style and charm of the book! "Chicken Grit & The Mutant Furies" Issue #1 is a wonderfully fun project that feels like a love letter to anyone who has ever wanted to make a comic book. It's gory, clever, and delightfully simple. I can't wait for more!
