Meet Chicken Grit, the tough-as-nails mutant chicken, and member of the Mutant Furies. In this behind-the-scenes look, as we gear up for the release of our debut comic, I dive into the origins of the character, exploring what inspired his creation and what makes him cluck!

It's amazing what a random drawing can do. I lay down on the rug to draw, as I often do. At one side is my dog, trying her best to feign interest but really just wanting a stoke. On the other side, I'd usually have one of my boys join me with their sketchpad or iPad to do their drawing. This is how I've drawn forever so that day was no different. I started sketching and for some reason sketched a superhero chicken, surrounded by other chickens - Chicken Grit had hatched onto the page!

Hatching an Idea...

From this, a whole host of questions from my family followed. "Why did he have a cattle prod?" Well, this was the farmers and Chicken Grit would have to fight him to escape and that's why it's in his hand (wing!). "Why was he hooded? " This was a sack that the farmer placed over his head, just before he attempted to execute Chicken Grit.

For every question they asked I was able to flesh out the drawing, from a random picture until it became a character. "Why is this chicken a superhero when all the other chickens aren't? " It was the final piece of the jigsaw. It was obvious, the evil Wolf Corp. had deliberately contaminated the food chain, then when Chicken Grit was hit by the electricity - Kaboom!

The next step is the big one, like Neil Armstrong taking that first step from the realtive safety of his shuttle and into the great unknown.

I am one man, one dad, doing this all alone. I have written and illustrated the first comic, in part to show my boys that you can make real what you imagine and also to put something in the world so they can say 'look what my dad did.'

I know nothing about publishing, getting it to print, or putting it into stores. That is the big next step... Like climbing one mountain, only to find a higher one behind it. You'll be able to buy it here, from the Chris Creates Things website on release, certainly in digital form so the best way to stay up to date is to keep reading my blog.

I reasoned that his food was contaminated and that when the electricity of the farmer's cattle prod hit Chicken Grit it caused a wild mutation! Not only had I created an enemy (the producers of this deliberately contaminated food) but I also introduced the idea that it had also been introduced to the human food chain.

This allowed me to come up with other wild characters (some of which you'll meet in the form of the Mutant Furies) and so my comic, Chicken Grit & The Mutant Furies was born!
